Stratford Elizabethan Shoes are the ideal footwear for your Renaissance Fair costume, whether you are depicting merchant class or the aristocracy. The design for "Stratford" is primarily based upon a pair of extant heels dating to about 1600, currently housed in the Ashmolean museum in Oxford, in the United Kingdom.

"Stratford" incorporates many elements from these originals, such as the slashing pattern on the upper, stitching on the rand and heel cover, continuous sole, and slightly blunt toe, and combines them with high quality leathers, topstiching upper and lining, and cushioning for modern comfort. Historically accurate from about 1580 to 1630, "Stratford" is appropriate for both Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, and similar designs can be seen in portraits by Robert Peake, Isaac Oliver, and William Larkin.

"Stratford" Elizabethan Shoes represent the first style in our "Signature" shoe collection, and have been developed in collaboration with noted cordwainer Francis Classe, a maker of highly researched, bespoke, reproduction Renaissance footwear. Francis' signature is featured on the leather footbed of each shoe, and a share of the profits from each sale go directly to him. Together, we feel we have created the most accurate and stunningly beautiful shoe for both men and women, constructed of the highest quality calf leather, lined in leather pigskin, and finished with randed construction and a thick, hard-wearing, real leather sole. No finer example of reproduction Elizabethan footwear can be found (except, of course, made by Francis himself!)

About the Designer

Francis Classe has been crafting historical reproduction shoes since 2000. His passion for shoemaking inspired him to study with other accomplished shoemakers and visit museums to research early modern extant shoes and their construction, down to minute details like stitch length, raw materials, and period tools. Much of his research, including pictures of extant pieces and pictorial evidence, can be seen on his website at http://www.raisedheels.com. Pictures of his past works can also be viewed, some of which were crafted for the highly authentic Tudor living history group at Kentwell Hall in Suffolk, in the United Kingdom.
